Love it, love it. I adore working with fresh herbs in most instances…what I hate is that I don’t have a running herb garden, so I have to pay hideous prices for small piles of herbs. And then I have amazing guilt when I don’t use them fast enough and I toss them in the [...]
I grew up with several holiday traditions. One was my mother (or my Nana when I was very young) making several breads over Thanksgiving and Christmas. Date Nut bread, Banana bread, pumpkin bread…yum! I didn’t know until way later that the pans that those breads were made in were ancient- belonging, at the [...]
I LOVE IT! I wish you didn’t need the pasta roller attachment first, because that makes this a significant investment, but I am truly in love with the idea of making my own pasta. I’ve always wanted to try it, but never had the opportunity. And ravioli is the one I’m most likely [...]
Lest you think all I drool over are expensive things… feast your eyes on THESE babies!
This is the first time since I got my own kitchen that I have a gas stove, and I am thrilled. I prefer cooking on gas. That said, boy does it get messy. suitNtie handles the after dinner [...]
A few Christmases ago, a very good family friend gifted me with the Gourmet Magazine cookbook. I had eyed it for a while but was thrilled to finally get a copy.
I’ve used the hell out of it. Some of my favorite recipes that I had used prior to owning the cookbook, so I [...]
I saw this the other day while reading Martha Stewart Living. Fantastic! Someone was really thinking. I’d love one because I tend to only use a handful of fresh herbs on a semi regular basis but I would love to experiment. Given the cost of fresh herbs and the high chance of [...]
I have yet to get to the point where I am buying spices in bulk (because they last longer) and grinding them as I need them (because they taste more fresh). I *really* want to. I like that you can just use a coffee grinder for your spices (although you never want to use the [...]
I just got my new W-S catalog. I think I’m in love. Holy crap. This thing is awesome! Well, except for the price. But, after mandolining my pinky while making zucchini quiche, perhaps it’s my equipment that is the problem? Yes? What’s that you say? I should treat myself to a great mandoline because [...]
I *really* want one of these. I was lucky enough that when we moved, I made the switch from electric to gas. I much prefer cooking on a gas stove. However, the stove in the new Kitchen is probably 11 years old (same as our house). It shows visible signs of wear and tear but [...]
Today’s post is inspired by the three beautiful pots of herbs that my aunt sent up with my uncle for our family BBQ yesterday. (She also sent up some potatoes from her organic garden, yum!)
I used to have a wonderful windowbox full of fresh herbs. Then I got married, and went away for [...]
It all started as a New Year's resolution for 2009. I wanted to start trying menu planning, a concept that I had stumbled across while looking for dinner ideas online. I dove into it with energy and unlike most diets, saw success immediately. The success only made me more interested in how I could improve, what new recipes I could find, etc. I started using my family blog for menu planning posts and it kind of started to take over. So, I decided to give my culinary fumblings their own home- and mygrandcentralkitchen.com was born.
Why "my grand central kitchen?" Well, I have 2 kids that are about 20 months apart. I have a husband who works from home. Cooking is a hobby for me. So you could say that aside from the playroom, the kitchen is the busiest room in my house and usually looks it. ;) It feels a bit like Grand Central Station, especially between 4 and 7 pm.
I hope that this blog gives me even more inspiration for my own home and the ability to inspire others in the kitchen, as well. I'll be posting not just menu planning and recipe links, but also interesting things I find online, things on my wishlist and recommendations. And who knows where it might go from there. :)
I certainly hope you enjoy the ride.
